Lewes Flood

The flooding of Lewes was very extensive and the worst disaster scene we had witnessed. Hundreds of houses were affected including the Shops & the Brewery. Many were listed buildings. The whole area was a sad sight.

When we first arrived access was via the West End of Lewes as the Cuilfail Tunnel was submerged with a contaminated mixture floating on top including Fuel where the near by petrol station had flooded. Initially there was nothing that could be done other than the evacuation being carried out by the Emergency Services. When the water abated there was a mixture of timber, dead cattle, beer barrels and numerous other debris floating off towards Newhaven & the Sea. Drying out started in the houses and shops, followed by the re-instatement works which took a long time to bring Lewes back to the beautiful town that is today.
